A right royal success

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that last month Catherine Middleton officially joined the royal family following her spectacular marriage to Prince William at Westminster Abbey. Whilst the wedding itself was watched by 24.5 million viewers and helped earn the country an estimated 1.4 billion pounds, it was the frenzied lead-up to the big day which I found the most interesting.
From the moment the pair announced their engagement last year, the event quickly become the most talked and written about event of 2011, with companies worldwide scrambling to out-do each other with the best gimmicks and PR stunts. Unfortunately, many of these are unlikely to ever get the royal seal of approval but some of them certainly earned mine, so I thought I’d share them.
Arguably the most successful was the ‘T-mobile Royal Wedding’, featuring royal lookalikes dancing along to pop band East 17’s song House of Love. Love it or hate it, you can’t deny that it cleverly tied in well with the brand’s recent viral efforts and resulted in more than 5.5 million views and countless media mentions for the brand. If you haven’t seen it yet (and there can’t be many of you left!) I would definitely recommend you check it out!

Food has also been a popular choice for royal gimmicks and we’ve seen Wills and Kate immortalised in cake by Sugart in Sussex and inspiring Nottingham brewer, Castle Brewery, created Kiss Me Kate pale ale among others.

However, as a huge pizza lover, my favourite has to be Papa John’s mosaic pizza depicting the happy couple. Kate’s dress was created from cheese and accessorised by a veil of mushrooms, whilst William looks delicious in a morning suit of salami and peppers.

The most notorious and certainly the most amusing however, were the royal wedding condoms by Crown Jewel Condoms, which encouraged people to lie back and think of England!

Of course, with the good always comes the bad, and I for one have to say that I’ve never been tempted to give my bathroom ‘throne’ a royal make over or enjoy ‘Royal Bed-ding’, illustrating the couple’s bodies which were offered by Premier Inn. So, with the wedding now well and truly behind us and the newly-weds settling into married life in... Anglesey, I’m eagerly anticipating the next big event that will send England’s PR companies and media into a tizzy!
