Celebrating young professionals
11th February 2011. Posted by Ruth Pipkin. Trackback

Five years ago (possibly to this day) I was sitting at my desk pondering over a nomination form for Birmingham Young Professional of the Year. Having attended the awards ceremony before, I didn’t see how I could live up to the standard of previous winners but thanks to words of encouragement from my managing director and colleagues I filled in the form and off it went.
I’ll never forget what happened next. I still get goosebumps at the memory of walking into the interview room and sitting in front of the great and good of the city. Talking is certainly not something I struggle with, but I remember my mouth going dry and my knees knocking under the table.
The awards night itself started with a nerve-wracking taxi ride where I thought to myself, perhaps I should have written some notes just in case….? I’m sure the meal and entertainment that followed were fantastic, but my overriding concern was whether to drink enough to calm down or stick to water. The walk up to the stage was looking like a real challenge.
Thankfully, neither champagne nor heels tripped me up (too much) that night, and being named BYPY 2006 proved to be a turning point in my career.
Winning awards is always going to be a great experience, but this particular title gave me the opportunity to meet some of the most influential people in the city, many of whom have been integral in shaping my career since. I was able to use it as a platform to speak to other young professionals about their aspirations, and developing and retaining talent in Birmingham is something I continue to support today.
So for those young professionals out there who are debating whether to fill out the form, I’d urge you to go for it. Whatever happens next, the process in itself will help you to review your achievements to date and focus on where you want to go next. If you’re nominated you’ll get the chance to meet some great people and you’ll definitely have a night to remember.
And for those employers and colleagues out there who know they have a star in their midst, you owe it to them to show your support and offer those words of encouragement that will help them to achieve recognition for their talent.
