Come Dine with Rewired
15th March 2011. Posted by Katie White. Trackback
After reading an article in the Birmingham Post about the rise in popularity of ‘Come Dine with Me’ parties a few weeks ago, Ruth suggested we do a six-week long ‘Come Dine with Rewired’.
Since 23rd February we have been doing the rounds of Rewired team member’s houses and are now three down, with three to go. The first dinner was held at Ruth’s house where we were taken on a culinary journey to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia; coincidentally the three countries that Ruth visited during her honeymoon. Starting with a delicious chicken satay dish and homemade peanut sauce, we couldn’t wait to find out what else was in store. A beef massamam curry followed, accompanied by a heart-shaped mound of rice, and an unbelievable homemade mango sorbet finished off the meal.
Dinner party games have apparently become an unspoken essential and at Ruth’s we played the ‘90s song titles game’. Each guest had two cards under their placemat with song titles written on them and we all had to try and slip them into conversation without being caught. I’m an apparently awful liar as I didn’t get away with ‘We’re Going to Ibiza’, even though I am this summer, while Rebecca somehow managed to slip in ‘Gangster’s Paradise’ without being caught.
We thoroughly enjoyed our night and I was nervous to be the next person up, as the bar had been raised so high by Ruth’s Masterchef-like performance. The following week, everyone arrived at my house to a glass of prosecco and crudités (some may say the cheat’s starter..) followed by Julia Child’s boeuf bourginon.
I love French cooking and this was the theme of my night. After a rich chocolate and amaretti torte (which only Tom managed seconds of) we proceeded to play one of my favourite games. A tad long winded to explain on here, but let’s just say you take a load of celebrities’ names, a version of ‘Articulate’ and charades and come out with a hilarious game that gets everyone very involved. There was lots of laughter and my housemate even did the washing up after so a good night was (hopefully!) had by all.
Last week we went to Rebecca’s pristine house where we were taken directly to the heart of Indian cuisine. We started with a spicy chicken tikka accompanied by a gorgeous cucumber raita on the side, perfectly complemented by poppadoms and chapatti. The main was a lamb rogan josh and dessert was fantastic, a lighter than air mango, cardamom yoghurt and cream dessert topped off with Mikado sticks.
We won’t mention Bec’s slight mishap with the rice. I’m pretty sure she could have fed most of Birmingham with the amount she cooked, but as we all said, it’s better to have too much than too little..
The night was finished off with a game of ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’, and, to stay on theme, a round of ‘Moscow Mules’. Delicious.
I’m very excited for the next three meals, we have Sam, Tara and Tom to go. We will be scoring once we have had all six dinner parties, so if you would like to place bets then do so now! Results will be posted up here after 30th March.
