Is sewing cool again?

We’re currently working on ‘Pop: Jann Haworth’, a fantastic exhibition appearing at Wolverhampton Art Gallery until 10 April 2010.

The exhibition, which is Jann’s first UK solo show in over 35 years, features work from the early 1960s through to the present day. The floor-based installation includes original works from 4 Young Artists, Haworth’s first exhibition at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) in 1963, as well her iconic 3D still-life piece Donuts, Coffee Cups & Comics (1962).  It also sees celebrated works such as Frank (1963), a life-size sculpture restored expressly for the Wolverhampton show, and the Old Lady sculpture (1962) that featured on the cover of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper LP, which Haworth designed with her then-husband Peter Blake.

Best-known for her sewn cloth sculptures, Jann has often been overlooked by her male counterparts, but recent years have seen a rise in recognition for the US-born artist.

To celebrate the exhibition and events running alongside it, we’re looking at whether sewing is considered uber-cool or old school. With a rise in groups like Stitches and Ho’s, I’m starting to think it’s the new ‘hot hobby’!
