Katie’s Diary, Week 3

Last week absolutely flew by we were so busy that I didn’t even have time to write my blog until now – I’m only 4 days late!
We kicked the week off by speaking to the guys at Unsuitable about the new B-hive website that is due to be launched in the coming month. Although I don’t want to give too much away the website sounds really exciting and I think that it really will be a useful resource for both students and graduates alike. It was interesting and productive meeting and I think the team appreciated hearing a student’s perspective on everything that had been planned. I felt that I had something real to contribute to the discussion and enjoyed the time we spent together.
On Wednesday we had our first team lunch since I’ve been here! After all picking and eating the same sandwich from the menu, Tara and I jumped in her car to go over to Smooth Radio where more discussions about Style Birmingham ensued.
That brings us on to Thursday – where do I even begin? If you don’t already know this was the day of the Fazeley Studios ‘Style in the City Designer Showcase’ event. The morning began with a dash to the Rag Market to pick up a few more metres of pink organza. It was then back to the office to make up some more pink sashes for the fashion show. There was a list of jobs to complete in the office, such as making up the winners packages, finalising the guest list and making up a box of everything and anything we might need to run the event.
At 3pm Ruth and I made our way to Fazeley to start setting up for the event. Tying sashes to chairs became the priority as we had over 100 chairs to do.
Tara became barmaid extraordinaire setting up the whole bar from the Isklar mineral water and bottlegreen flavoured waters to the endless bottles of Magner’s Pear Cider (which you can spot in nearly every picture if you look closely!!).
After the guests had arrived, Jessica Butcher was announced as the winner of the ‘Designer of the Future’ competition. She unfortunately could not attend the event but the two highly commended runners up were in attendance; Joanne Lloyd and Laura Berry.
After the excitement of the announcement, everyone grabbed another drink and made their way to the catwalk. The first show was put together by Tracie at Adage Models who showcased the work of three Birmingham City University fashion graduates.
Then it was the turn of Sulaimi Brookman to premier his ready-to-wear collection. The models who were brought together by Nicola from Furore PR were very distinctive with their pursed, bright red lips and put on an absolutely beautiful show.
The whole evening was a great success and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. After spending an hour clearing up and filling three cars with empty bottles, pink sashes, flyers and a mini fridge it was finally time to go home and put our feet up ready for the long weekend ahead!
Feeling very sad that it is my last week here but with new jobs coming in all the time there is no time to sit around – in fact I better stop here now and get on with some work!
