The value of a Big Idea

Yesterday saw me taking part in the PR panel interviews for b-hive - a great new concept by the guys at Pitch to help develop and retain creative talent in the West Midlands. More on that here.
It was a pretty full-on day - our panel of seven interviewed 13 shortlisted students, who all presented their ideas on how to promote Marketing Birmingham's Live & Learn campaign, in itself designed to attract and retain students in Birmingham. One thing was clear, all of the students who entered the Dragon's Den yesterday showed a real passion for Birmingham, and many of them were unaware of what the city had to offer before they came to university. They were also united in a love of Birmingham's growing music scene, and Facebook!
We heard some fantastic campaigns, saw some extremely well-thought out presentations, and witnessed real passion. Five students ended up securing coveted placements at the participating agencies. But the overall winner, Katie White, amazed us all by putting her eggs in one basket and pitching one big idea. I won't divulge more yet, as Katie may well want to take this one forward herself, but it just goes to show that if you have the confidence, and belief in your ideas, you can win through.
More often than not agencies can play it safe and offer clients a menu of ideas to hedge their bets. There's nothing wrong in this approach, but I have sometimes felt that this can dilute your ideas, and doesn't challenge you as an agency to strive for that one killer campaign. Well done Katie for having the nerve, and the creativity, to go for it. We're really looking forward to welcoming you on your placement here this summer!

Congratulations Katie on a well-deserved win. Congratulations too to the Rewired team on choosing Katie, one of the brightest sparks to enter the world of P.R. Katie's dedicated work ethic, her terrific creativity, her winning personality and looks and her dedication and commitment to Birmingham and above all her sense of fun will make her an asset to any company who takes her on. I speak from a professional point of view, even though I am Katie's Aunt, as I am also a producer, director, actress and author, based in Los Angeles, and may well engage Katie's services myself sometime in the not too distant future for the launch of my new book, even though I may have to stand in line. Katie we are really proud of you and all the hard work paid off !
