There will be no ‘sting’ in this opportunity

You should know by now that we love supporting graduates here at Rewired and I think we are definitely practicing what we preach. Not only did I graduate last year (yes, I really am that young), but Ruth also sits on a Graduate Retention committee and we currently have Dom, an MA Media Enterprise student, doing a placement with us. I was delighted yesterday when we were asked to take part in the B-Hive programme because I think it’s a fantastic resource for students.

I was extremely lucky in my endeavours to find work experience; not only are both my parents in the music industry, meaning I have always had an insider view of media and the arts, but I also managed to cram in 18 months experience whilst still at uni. I was offered a six month placement at Stella McCartney’s Press Office at the end of my second year of uni, which was amazing opportunity. I got to work in an industry that is far from glamorous, but that I love all the same. Luckily my parents could support me to live in London, unpaid, for six months but I know so many people that would never have that luxury, and should they ever get offered a chance like that, would have to turn it down. Straight after Stella McCartney, I started my placement year at Gigbeth music festival. As a lover of music and the city, working at a music festival in Birmingham was the ideal job for me. It was a really hands-on role, working from inception to execution throughout the whole festival, which again was an amazing experience. Whilst my friends were fetching coffee for uptight marketing folk at power tool companies, I was planning launches and hanging around with musicians. It was actually during this placement that I met Ruth… all those many moons ago.

I am delighted that Rewired is involved with B-Hive; I think it is really important to get students out of the catch-22 of studying full time, having no experience to find a job and yet needing experience to actually get a job. So many graduates will be leaving university this year to face an uncertain future in the ‘economic downturn’ but hopefully this programme will make some people’s future a little sweeter (excuse the bee/honey pun).

It is fantastic that Pitch have recognised the importance of this issue, as have Marketing Birmingham, who are supporting the scheme. It will also be fantastic working with the other agencies that are on board; Golly Slater, KLM, Leader, McCann Erickson, One Black Bear, RBH, Seal, Trimedia and WAA.

It will also be great having another team member for the summer… we are going to be busy little bees this year!
