Tracking down the Royals

Twitter, yet again, proved its worth for the latest, of-the-minute information today. As an office that was completely obsessed with the Royal Wedding and has subsequently been on permanent Kate Middleton ‘Outfit Watch’, we were all very excited to hear that the Royals would be coming to the city to visit those affected by the riots of last week.

As our most important ambassadors, it is a great show of solidarity and support to see the Royal couple visit our city. The riots were simply awful to witness and to live through, as a company based in the Jewellery Quarter we are close to the city centre and any kind of disruption is very nerve wracking.

The use of social media throughout the riots has been both praised and criticised, with Twitter in particular becoming rife with rumour and exaggeration. At one point an out of date picture of the Bull with its head sawn off was being circulated, while a very realistic image of Bank in London being invaded by tanks was also being Tweeted by a number of people.

However, despite the criticism and the possible confusion from some of these messages, Twitter did prove very effective when trying to find out about road closures, areas of trouble and eyewitness accounts of where was safe to be and where wasn’t within the city. The site enabled emergency services to communicate directly with those who wanted information and helped bring the community together to keep each other safe, and for those reasons alone showed Twitter to be an invaluable tool in a crisis situation.

Moving on from that situation back to today’s; as we heard helicopters circle overhead the first Tweet appeared to say that, lo and behold, William and Kate were coming to the Jewellery Quarter. An excited scramble ensued and after a couple of quick searches we were able to locate the Duke and Duchess, who were visiting a local newsagent, Machan Express on Newhall St. A short sprint later and there we were, cheering along with the crowds and snapping pictures on our smart phones. Pictures that we all excitedly uploaded back onto the site that had told us where to go in the first place.

Back in the office content and very excited, we can thank Twitter for allowing us the opportunity to see the country’s most famous couple. And here they are (we’re told Kate was wearing McQueen):
