An outdoor cinema comes to Meir for one night only

Meir will be transformed this summer with the construction of an outdoor cinema that will be open, free of charge, to all families in the area For One Night Only.

On the evening of Tuesday 16th August, a screening of a feature film, along with specially created short films, will take place in a purpose built outdoor cinema next to The Plantation Playground, Meir. Local families and children will be invited to come and watch the films and will also be provided with complimentary drinks and snacks.

The event, which is a celebration of the local community, will be the result of a week’s work to both build the cinema and create the short films.

B-Arts, a local arts organisation in Stoke-on-Trent, will be requesting help and materials from residents in Meir from Friday 12th to Monday 15th August so that it can work with the community to construct the cinema for the For One Night Only evening.

From Monday 8th – Friday 12th August, between 11.00am – 3.00pm, an Animation Station will be on The Plantation and will be open to anyone over the age of eight if they are unaccompanied and younger children who come with an adult. The Animation Station will help local residents make short films under the title For One Night Only which will then be played on the evening of the 16th. The sessions are free of charge and all materials are provided.

Trevelyan Wright, of B-Arts, says: “We are really looking forward to working in Meir on this very exciting project. The animation workshops that will be taking place all week provide a great way to keep young people and families entertained with a fun activity during the summer holidays.

“The outdoor cinema will be something useful and worthwhile made entirely from the items that people would normally throw away, such as wood or cinema posters. We’re always thrilled to work in Stoke-on-Trent, where we have been based for 25 years. We just have our fingers crossed that it doesn’t rain!”
