BASS Festival brings art to the streets

MTV and RWD Magazine’s ‘About to Blow’ artist T.Magic has been commissioned by this year’s BASS Festival to take his art to the streets of Leicester, as part of the month-long festival.

Throughout June, the 24-year-old Goldsmith’s Graduate will be using Leicester as the inspiration for a new series of work for ‘Art is my Hustle’; a collection of dark social commentary on forgotten communities.

Through the power of an aerosol can, T.Magic aims to give a voice to impoverished communities, using powerful slogans such as ‘Respect is my Product’, ‘Success is my Destiny’ and ‘Colour is my Flava’. These infamous slogans and use of the Sinclair Spectrum (red, yellow, green and blue), seen throughout his work, will form the base of this new work.

Although he will be focussing on street art, ‘Art is my Hustle’ sees T.Magic using a range of mediums, from pavements and sculpture, to canvas prints and photography. Despite only being in his mid-twenties, T.Magic has already secured a standing in the UK’s art world, exhibiting in the likes of The Air Gallery, Mayfair, and Lazarides, Soho. He has also made a name for himself in the fashion world with a range of limited edition t-shirts and trainers.

T.Magic joins a line-up of artists, musicians and performers taking part in this year’s festival. BASS has also enlisted the skills of typography expert Swifty to design flyers for ‘Arts Own Kind’, an exhibition featuring the work of controversial album sleeve artist Ghariokwu Lemi, showing in London and Birmingham. A number of workshops and events will also be celebrating visual arts, including Urban Legacy in Leicester, Quad Graffiti takeover in Derby, and the Graffiti and Visual Arts workshop in Nottingham.

Taking place for the fourth consecutive year, BASS (British Arts and Street Sounds) Festival 2009 will be celebrating the influence of Africa on the British arts scene. Venues across London and the Midlands will play host to live music, theatre and dance performances, art exhibitions, film screenings and master classes.
