Cadbury Bournville collect Big Tick for homeless work

Representatives from the Cadbury site at Bournville have recently picked up a coveted Big Tick Award from Business in the Community (BITC), recognising the work of the Birmingham Business Action on Homelessness steering group in supporting homeless people find employment.

The Birmingham Business Action on Homelessness (BBAOH) Steering Group received the accolade in the BITC 2009 awards, securing re-accreditation for the Power in Partnership Award.

The Big Tick is awarded to businesses that demonstrate significant impact and high quality management of their responsible business practices, showing a positive effect for both society and the business as a whole.

The BBAOH Steering Group is made up of 6 national and 7 local businesses and is chaired by Cadbury Head of Manufacturing Steve Hills, following the departure of former Cadbury chair for seven years, Mark Jones. The group enforces the company-wide Ready for Work programme, supporting homeless people and those at risk of homelessness achieve sustainable employment solutions; demonstrating Cadbury’s commitment to both Employability and Wellbeing.

The programme is already achieving positive results. Cadbury World, the tourist attraction also on the Bournville site, has recruited no less than four clients from the BAOH programme in the last year alone, following initial two week placements. Various pilot projects taken on by the Steering Group have also opened up new and rewarding volunteering opportunities for existing employees.

Steve Hills, Cadbury Head of Manufacturing and chair of the group said:
“To win any business award is an honour, but to win one celebrating our work in the community is especially gratifying. This award recognises that Cadbury and other local employers have a vested interest in Birmingham and its people, in particular those that may otherwise not get the support they deserve.”

Stephen Howard, Chief Executive of Business in the Community, said:
“I congratulate the BBAOH Steering Group for winning a Big Tick. In the current climate, it is more important than ever to recognise and celebrate organisations who acknowledge the impact they have on society and who are committed to tackling wider issues, not just because they should, but because it’s good for business.”
