“Creative industries must improve efficieny to survive”

The managing director of a leading Birmingham design agency has warned creative companies they must improve their business processes if they are to weather the economic storm.
Speaking at the launch of Periscope, a new studio management tool developed by IE Design, the company’s managing director Ollie Leggett said:
“Many creative businesses develop tunnel vision, with an exclusive focus on creativity, to the extent that business processes suffer, leading to missed deadlines, projects running over budget and disappointed clients.
“In today’s economic climate it’s more important than ever to create a productive working environment that eliminates wasted time, ensures that employees are working to their optimum capacity and, most importantly, ensures that you are being paid for your work in a timely fashion.”
Ollie believes that the region’s creative sector should look to the manufacturing industry to understand the importance of efficiency. He said:
“For years, the manufacturing sector has been devising and refining robust business processes to ensure efficient workflow management, accurate scheduling and disciplined delivery. The understanding that continuous improvement, or process excellence, is key to success underpins every part of the production line.”
“We’ve adapted these principles in the development of Periscope, to create a studio management system that is specifically tailored to the needs of a small to medium sized creative company. By enabling business owners to regain control, they can create a more integrated, leaner working environment and increase profitability.”
Accessed through a secure online account, Periscope’s core features are free of charge for all users, with a number of additional modules available for a small monthly fee. The system enables companies to drive sales, schedule workload across teams, record timesheets, manage contacts and generate invoices.
