DanceXchange presents an evening of Afro-Eclectic dance

Vocab Dance Company presents a performance inspired by aspects of black culture and heritage as part of DanceXchange’s (dx) ten year celebrations.

Founded in 2007, Vocab Dance Company fuses traditional and modern African dance, Contemporary dance forms and Hip Hop to create a unique vocabulary named Afro-Eclectic Dance. Episodes of Blackness is a double bill comprising a revival of the highly-acclaimed Kwenda-Kwenda and presentation of the new work Word!

Merging the disciplines of dance theatre, music and spoken word, Word! is a choreographic response to the headlines around youth culture, while Kwenda-Kwenda is a compelling exploration of a female’s wish to step away from one’s roots without jeopardising tradition. The result is a distinctly fast-paced, athletic evening of Afro-Eclectic Contemporary Dance.

David Massingham, Artistic Director of DanceXchange (dx), comments: “Following a fantastic performance as part of Utopia in International Dance Festival Birmingham 2010, I’m excited to welcome back to Birmingham such a dynamic and talented young company. Episodes of Blackness is a raw and engaging work that explores important and relevant issues in our society”

Episodes of Blackness is part of a line-up of special performances organised by dx to celebrate ten years since the powerhouse of dance relocated to Birmingham Hippodrome. In the last decade dx has supported the production of some of the world’s most successful dance works  and this anniversary season sees it continue to bring international artists to Birmingham including the world premiere of TAO Dance Theatre’s new work, Weight x 3 (excerpt) & 2.
