Fashion Event to Bolster City’s Visitors

Two of the region’s leading organisations have announced their support for a major fashion event, which promises to boost the city’s visitor and economic levels. Advantage West Midlands and Marketing Birmingham have signed up as partners for this year’s The Sunday Times Style in the City, taking place 24-26 September.

Style in the City will bring thousands of fashion fans to Birmingham for a series of fashion and beauty events at some of the city’s most popular retailers, including Bullring, Pavilions and The Mailbox. The event will also see TV personalities Gok Wan and Emma Willis, both from the Midlands, hosting catwalk shows, style sessions and in-store events.

Advantage West Midlands, the region’s economic development agency, plays a key role in attracting domestic and foreign visitors to the area – and has identified festivals and events as one of four market growth opportunities in a tourism sector worth £6 billion a year.
Style in the City is one of a number of events in the region promoted and supported by Advantage West Midlands. More information can be found on the regional tourism website a key national event for the region and will be promoted through the regional website visittheheart.co.uk

The Style in the City event will also re-affirm Birmingham’s status as a leading centre of fashion and world-class shopping, following the latest CACI Retail Figures (May 2009), which named the city as the most popular shopping destination outside of London’s West End for the fourth consecutive year.

Nigel Russell, Head of Tourism at Advantage West Midlands, said: “The retail industry is integral to the tourism sector and this is an opportunity showcase the excellent high-end offer available in Birmingham and the West Midlands region.

“Festivals and events, culture, food and drink and business tourism are four areas where investment by Advantage West Midlands can make a real impact.”

Style in the City is also being supported by visitbirmingham.com, the city’s official tourist information visitor website, managed by Marketing Birmingham. The organisation is also looking to the fashion event to help profile Birmingham on a national and international level, and encourage greater tourism.

Dave Hodgson, Marketing Director at Marketing Birmingham, said:

“Marketing Birmingham is proud to be a part of an event which brings together so many elements of the city’s fashion and creative scene. Style in the City provides an exciting opportunity to showcase Birmingham’s offering not only as a great shopping destination but also as the ideal choice for the perfect weekend break”.

Style in the City takes place 24-26 September across Birmingham’s most stylish venues. Highlights of the event include the exclusive Catwalk Show, hosted by Emma Willis, at The Mailbox, Gok Wan’s style sessions at Bullring, and The Oasis at Pavilions. There will also be a series of in-store events at Harvey Nichols, House of Fraser, M& S and Selfridges.
