Female DJs celebrate African music at charity gig

An all female DJ line-up will celebrate the influence of African music and African women at a fundraising charity gig at this year’s BASS Festival.

As part of the month-long festival, which features a musical line-up showcasing the best in black music, Mama Africa will demonstrate the influence African music has had on Western black music; including genres such as Funk, Soul, Afrobeat and Jazz.

The event will feature sets from top DJ duo Mama Feel Good! aka ‘She-jays’ Bobbalin’ Hot and Sister 45, recently voted one of Flavour Magazine’s ‘Fab 5 Groups to Emerge from the UK Music Scene’.

As well as bringing an exciting and eclectic musical mix to the dance floor, Mama Africa also aims to funds and awareness for three African women’s charities; Global Mamas, the Kanga Project and ACTSA’s Dignity! Period campaign. All proceeds from the £3 entry fee will go to the causes.

In addition to Mama Feel Good bring their feminine vibes to the BASS musical proceedings, UK rapper and MOBO ‘Best Hip Hop Act’ Sway will also lead a series of live gigs across the country. Celebrating the influence of Afrobeat on contemporary urban styles, I Dream of Fela is a live collaboration between Sway, Baby J and percussionist Richard Olatunde Baker that will tour Leicester, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, The Shrine, aka DJs Rita Ray and Max Reinhardt, sink their teeth into the first ever vampire film 'Nosferatu' at the Electric Cinema on June 21, providing their own live soundtrack. The Rainbow will also host live hip-hop beats from producers LouisDen Beat Cypher on 11 June, with a participatory beat-battle organised for attendees.

Catch Mama Feel Good! at the Bulls Head, Moseley, St Mary’s Row, Birmingham, on Saturday 6 June. Tickets cost £3 and are available to purchase from www.bassfestival.co.uk.
