Graffiti takes over as BASS comes to Derby
Residents of Derby should prepare for a full-scale graffiti takeover during the month of June, as part of a project celebrating urban art.
Throughout June, established and underground graffiti artists from the Midlands will create large scale public art pieces to celebrate this year’s BASS Festival.
These innovative works will be displayed outside the QUAD building in Derby, promoting the most talented artists from the Midlands and beyond, whilst providing a little taste of Africa.
All of the original work produced during the Graffiti Takeover will also be showcased on a celebration evening at QUAD on 29 June. There will be workshops in music and video production followed by live performances from JDM and T camp, Rukus with the Trinity band and Trinity Warriors breakdance crew, as well as a screening of the DMC DJ championships.
Promoted by Baby J Enterprises, QUAD Graffiti Takeover is just one event on the BASS (British Arts and Street Sounds) 2009 line-up. Street art is also the focus of Art is my Hustle, where sought-after young artist T.Magic will use the backdrop of Leicester to provide dark social commentary on forgotten communities.
With a range of events taking place across the Midlands, as well as London, Manchester and Scotland, BASS – produced by Birmingham-based Punch Records, in association with Baby J and 2Funky Arts – will showcase live performances, exhibitions and masterclasses celebrating black and African culture.
The Graffiti Takeover celebration evening takes place on 29 June at QUAD, Market Place, Cathedral Quarter in Derby. Entry is free.
