International premiere of dance ‘Session’ in Birmingham
An evening of dance that brings the rituals and ceremonies of ancient Africa into the 21st century will receive its world premiere in Birmingham.
Part of this year’s eclectic BASS Festival lineup, ‘The Session’ features dancers moving to rhythms from contemporary composers who embrace the heritage of their ancestors.
‘The Session’ is the work of respected choreographer Paradigmz, a performer who also incorporates acting, rapping and poetry into his work. As Artistic Director of the London Diaspora Dance Theatre (LDDT), which he founded in 2004, Paradigmz aims to reflect black British culture through his compositions.
After graduating with a degree in contemporary dance in 1996, Paradigmz toured internationally with a number of world renowned dance and theatre companies before forming LDDT. For ‘The Session’, the group will draw their inspiration from the vast artistic experience of the London Diaspora, married with modern dance and theatre aesthetics.
BASS Festival is the UK’s only month long celebration of urban music and art. This year, the festival is ‘Inspired by Africa and Africans’, making Paradigmz’s celebration of African dance all the more relevant.
The festival bill includes another scheduled dance event, with the appearance of breakdancing group Trinity Warriors at QUAD in Derby on 29 June.
‘The Session’ takes place on 13 June at Patrick Centre, Birmingham Hippodrome. Tickets cost £10 and are available to purchase at www.dancexchange.org.uk or from Birmingham Hippodrome Box Office on 0844 338 5000.
