Lasan Riding High on Recent Award-Wins

Birmingham’s Lasan is celebrating this month after a series of successes including a British Curry Award and Institute of Asian Business Award, as well as recognition from Gordon Ramsay and listing in the Guardian’s top Indian Restaurants.
The Birmingham restaurant has seen a number of additions to their trophy shelf, including retaining their title at the British Curry Awards for the third consecutive year. Widely recognised as the most high profile event in the spice industry calendar, the 5th annual award ceremony took place in London and was hosted by newsreader and journalist, Sir Trevor McDonald. The event was attended by over 1,600 industry guests and dignitaries, including Conservative Party Leader David Cameron.
This month has also seen Lasan crowned the country’s top Indian Restaurant by Gordon Ramsay on the latest series of The F Word. They were chosen from thousands of entries across the country to compete in the celebrity chef’s search for the Britain’s ‘Best Local Restaurant’ as part of the latest Channel 4 series.
Chef Director, Aktar Islam, wowed the show’s critical diners with his contemporary Indian cuisine and led Lasan to win the Indian Restaurant heat, beating off competition from an established Cheltenham curry house. Gordon Ramsay said that he was impressed with Aktar’s confident kitchen presence and cooking style, and the restaurant remains at the top of the leader board after the French and Italian finalists failed to beat their high score. The competition concludes at the start of 2010 when the overall winner will be crowned.

In addition to restaurant success, Jabbar Khan, Director of the Lasan Restaurant Group, has also picked up the ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ Award at the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Institute of Asian Business Awards.
He said:
“This has undoubtedly been one of our most successful periods and we’re delighted to continue our success with such prestigious accolades. The awards and recognition we have received are incredible, and a testament to the hard work and dedication that Aktar and the team have given to creating authentic and innovative menus. We’re grateful to everyone that supports us, especially our customers, and we’re all looking forward to continuing our success into 2010.”
Located at the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter on St Paul’s Square, Jabbar founded Lasan in 2002. Since then, the restaurant has collected a string of awards, including Men’s Health Magazine’s Healthiest Restaurant Awards and a Michelin Guide recommendation. They have also just been listed in the Guardian’s ‘Top 10 Indian Restaurants in the UK’, joining a similar endorsement from The Independent and The Times received earlier this year.

Jabbar’s business partner and the restaurant’s Chef Director, Aktar Islam, has also appeared on cookery programs including The Market Kitchen and Sharon Osbourne’s ‘Mrs Osbourne Presents’, as well as numerous appearances at the BBC Good Food Show.
