Millennium Point provides BIG platform for work

An Autism West Midlands employee, who has helped to find work placements for individuals with Asperger syndrome at Millennium Point, is taking part in a campaign about the building’s many visitors and tenants as part of its 10th Birthday celebrations.
Joanne Gumbrell, from Selly Oak in Birmingham, has helped to place six individuals at Millennium Point since 2006, including four assistants at Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum and IMAX Cinema, and one assistant to the IT lecturers at Birmingham City University’s Technology Innovation Centre.
Joanne, a team leader at ASpire, a department of Autism West Midlands, said:
“People with Asperger syndrome experience difficulties in three areas, communication, social interaction and flexibility of thought. One of the barriers our individuals have in gaining employment is that people do not know enough about Asperger syndrome and can often make assumptions on what that person can and can't do.
“We have been working with the staff at Millennium Point for the past five years to provide a platform to successfully showcase individual’s abilities in the workplace and I’m pleased to be a part of such a great scheme.”
Nick Winterbotham, chief executive of Millennium Point Trust, said:
“Millennium Point has been providing placement opportunities for the past ten years and we’re always looking to work with local organisations.
“We like the fact that ASpire is based in locally in Digbeth and the partnership has been a huge success. Through working together, members of staff at Millennium Point have been able to dispel any myths or pre-conceptions that they may have had about Asperger syndrome and have benefitted from the hard work that the placement individuals have put in, from their accuracy when in-putting important data, to their customer service skills when dealing with visitors in Thinktank's gift shop.”
