The work of one of the world’s most prolific female Pop Artists, Jann Haworth, will be shown in the UK for the first time in over 35 years as a new exhibition opens at Wolverhampton Art Gallery later this month.
Pop: Jann Howarth is Haworth’s first solo show in the UK since 1972 and will feature work from the early 1960s through to the present day.
The floor-based installation will include original works from 4 Young Artists, Haworth’s first exhibition at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) in 1963, as well her iconic 3D still-life piece Donuts, Coffee Cups & Comics (1962). It will also see celebrated works such as Frank (1963), a life-size sculpture restored expressly for the Wolverhampton show, and the Old Lady sculpture (1962) featured on the cover of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper LP, which was designed by Haworth with her then-husband Peter Blake.

Best-known for her sewn cloth sculptures, Jann Haworth has often been overlooked by her male counterparts, but recent years have seen a rise in recognition for the US-born artist. Born in Hollywood, California in 1942, Haworth moved to London in 1962 to study at the Slade School of Fine Art, where she began fabricating the soft sculptures that led to her first exhibition at the 1963 ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) 4 Young Artists show in London.
Haworth has received numerous awards for her achievements in art, including the specially designated Robert Fraser Award in 1997. Exhibitions of her work have been held at galleries worldwide, including New York, Paris and Milan, although this is the first time Wolverhampton Art Gallery will host an exhibition focusing solely on a female Pop artist, despite being well-known for its prestigious Pop Art collection. The Gallery has co-curated the exhibition with the artist and the Mayor Gallery, London.

“Following the successful display of Wolverhampton’s Pop Art Collection we are excited to be hosting and celebrating the work of Jann Howarth. This exhibition will reaffirm Jann as a leading figure in the Pop Art movement, while showcasing her new work in our dedicated pop art gallery space.
New pieces that will feature in the exhibition include three oversize stuffed fabric charm bracelets and a Minnie Mouse-themed corset.
