Retooled car workers launch website

Longbridge car workers that were made redundant when the factory closed have created a new innovative website to share their experiences.
The project took a handful of ex Rover employees and gave them the opportunity to learn new web skills with the help of a team of digital mentors. The group has now launched a website www.retooled.co.uk designed to offer advice and support to other people who are currently struggling with redundancy.
Retooled features filmed interviews from nine individuals who previously occupied roles at Rover ranging from human resource management, design and logistics to welding, engineering and system analysis. In the interviews the participants discuss their experiences of being made redundant and how it impacted their lives. The project aims to grow the website into a worldwide resource for anyone in a similar situation and offers advice on how to get back into the world of work. It showcases employee success stories and explains how the participants managed to obtain new roles in human resources, customer services and self-employment. Retooled is now open for anyone around the country or even internationally to add their own experiences and build the resource.
Lizzie Ostrom, the project coordinator said:
“The present job climate remains unstable with millions of people currently redundant and the situation is set to get worse with the announcement of cuts to 350,000 public sector jobs. The Retooled project not only enabled the participants to learn new digital skills but also pass on their invaluable experiences to a wider audience who will hopefully benefit from their advice and support.
Retooled is an independent project produced by Antonio Gould and Lizzie Ostrom on behalf of Maverick. This pilot is supported by Arts Council England and Birmingham City Council as part of Say Hello, a programme of projects for Hello Digital designed to break new ground for participatory work around digital media.
