Step it up to support the troops

A marathon walking challenge to raise money for injured soldiers will be taking place on Sunday 6th June.

The twenty-six mile sponsored Walkathon is in aid of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity which supports soldiers who have been severely injured or disabled in the war and hopes to develop rehabilitation facilities to assist in their recovery. These rehabilitation rooms will also serve as recreation rooms allowing patients to spend time with other military patients and families whilst learning how to adjust to their new circumstances.

The charity Walkathon is returning after an 18-year break and is being organised by Birmingham based radio station BRMB. Since the first Walkathon the event has raised over £4 million for local charities including helping to fund a new wing at Acorns Children’s Hospice.

This year the Walkathon has introduced three different levels including a short Walkathon of six to seven miles to encourage families and young people to take part. There is also a Half Walkathon for those who can’t manage the original twenty-six mile route. It is hoped that 10,000 people will take part in the BRMB Lookers Vauxhall Walkathon which is also being sponsored by the Midlands chocolate institution, Cadbury World.

Mike Hammond, Chief Executive at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity said:
“The soldiers here at Selly Oak Hospital have undergone devastating traumas. As well as providing immediate medical care, we need to continue providing care beyond the operations and help them begin living their lives again. Being able to provide them with a ‘home from home’ environment will be a huge step in their rehabilitation. It’s difficult to over-estimate the importance of this to those who have gone through so much and their families which continue to stand by them.”

Andy Price, Regional Marketing Manager at BRMB said:
“We wanted to bring back the popular Walkathon after such a long absence because it is a great community event that brings everyone together to raise money for a charity close to the hearts of local people. I would strongly encourage everyone to take part in the Walkathon because the steps you take on June 6th will help members of the armed forces take their next steps.”
