The winners of Birmingham’s 48 hour film challenge are announced

Last Thursday the film ‘Happiness – A Novelisation’ from Team Make It So was announced as the winner of Film Dash, Hello Digital’s 48 hour film challenge.

Catherine Bray, Editor of Film4.com and feature film script editor, Kate Leys were among the expert panel who judged the 23 films submitted. Last Thursday Ian Ravenscroft from Meshed Media announced Harry Vale, Stan Chau, Dale Chance, Vicky Barry and Lisa Evans as the overall winners and screened the winning film to an audience of ninety people at The Electric Cinema. Film Dash was produced by Meshed Media and challenged aspiring filmmakers to write, cast, shoot and edit a short film in just 48 hours.

This year’s panel received drama, comedies, stop-motion animation and even music videos submitted from not only the West Midlands but also Nottingham, Norwich and London. The challenge was open to anyone but each team had to ensure that their entry incorporated a set line of dialogue from a feel good film and props including balloons, pineapples and Wellington boots, following a theme of happiness supplied by sponsors Bullring.

All the films will be screened throughout the year by Hello Digital and also hosted on sponsor Bullring’s website www.lifefeelsbetter.co.uk, which will be advertised on Yahoo! Movies, MSN Movies, Empire Online and Film.com. Make It So also won a selection of Blu-ray films provided by Bullring’s HMV and a place on a script-writing course donated by Script. Second place was given to ‘Eric’ by Hermit House and third place was shared by Stickleback Productions with ‘Seconds Out’ and Junction Zero with ‘Happy Ending.’

Chris Unitt, Director of Meshed Media said: “We were thrilled with the number and originality of entries this year. It goes to show what can be achieved with digital media – the teams showed great creativity and you can see in the films how much fun they had doing it.”

Cllr Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said: “The calibre of the entries was fantastic and we were delighted that Catherine Bray and Kate Leys were able to help us choose the deserving winners. Film Dash was a great start to the new line-up of creative events and activities occurring in Birmingham over the coming months.”
