West Midlands football goes back to the future

West Bromwich Albion football fan

With West Bromwich Albion joining four other teams from the West Midlands in the Premiership this year, the glory days are well and truly back in the region.

The Baggies join Aston Villa, Birmingham, Wolves and Stoke in the top flight for the first time since 1983/84 season and to celebrate this, fans of the clubs are being given the chance to look back at great footballing memories thanks to an innovative online video mash-up tool.

The free web-based experience, WeVee, is providing users with access to a host of football related clips including Birmingham City’s first appearance in the FA Cup Final in 1931 when they played neighbours West Brom and the last FA Cup Final played before the start of the Second World War in 1939 between Wolves and Portsmouth.

Over 30 football-themed clips from the past century are available at www.wevee.co.uk. Footage comes from across the West Midlands and includes a host of selected FA Cup matches dating back to 1904 and clips of fans of Aston Villa and West Brom ahead of big games.

WeVee enables users to view and edit clips from the region’s rich collection of film and video archives, edit them to music and create their own mash-ups to share and swap online through social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter.

The football-themed clips join a rich archive of moving image footage dating back to 1901 including documentary film and animation, and previously unseen material from The Midlands Archive for Central England, Cadbury’s, The Staffordshire Film Archive and Vivid.

Rebecca Cadwallader, Creative Producer at In Cahoots who manages the WeVee project said:

“Although things don’t always go to plan on the pitch, football fans now have the chance to see some of the best and most unusual matches in the history of the beautiful game. By creating their own mash-up of archive film they’ll also get to secure the perfect ending for their favourite team!”

WeVee has been developed by Midlands based In Cahoots, the digital division of Television Junction, and digital agency, Clusta, with support from Screen West Midlands’ UK Film Council Digital Film Archive Fund.
