West Midlands workers walking 9 til 5
A unique experiment to discover which profession is the most active has been launched in the West Midlands.
The BRMB Workplace Walkabout is challenging volunteers from a wide range of industries to count how many steps they take each working day over the next month. The experiment, aimed at finding out who is on their feet all day and who needs to step it up, will see how much exercise employees from different industries get whilst at work.

The volunteers, who will take part in the experiment throughout May, include hairdresser Gail Dunne from Umberto Giannini, Solicitor and Chair of Birmingham Future Amanda Porter, car salesman Lee Perkins from Lookers Vauxhall and Energy Saving Trust Advisor Laura Parker.
Working with a fitness advisor, volunteers will be given helpful tips on how to improve their levels of exercise during the day, and see if any improvements have been made in the coming weeks.
The experiment is part of the build up to the BRMB and Vauxhall Lookers Walkathon which is happening on Sunday 6th June. The Birmingham radio station announced it is bringing back the charity Walkathon, which first started in 1983, to help raise money for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity who supports soldiers who have been severely injured or disabled.
Laura Parker, an Energy Saving Trust Advisor from EST West Midlands said
“I’m training to do the Walkathon as well as other walks for charity and think the Workplace Walkabout is a great way of staying focused and finding out how much exercise we all do at work”
Andy Price, Regional Marketing Manager at BRMB said:
“We’re seeing a large number of businesses sign up teams to compete in the Walkathon on 6th June. The Workplace Walkabout is a great way of giving various industries a taste of the day as well as finding out which profession is the most active. I’m looking forward to seeing the results.”
