It aims to give one exceptional graduate an unrivalled insight into the vibrant social and professional scene of Birmingham through individual sixteen week placements at three Birmingham based firms.<br /><br />In addition to gaining both work and life experience, the graduate will receive a year&rsquo;s complimentary membership to Birmingham Future, the support and guidance of a mentor and training opportunities from Graduate Advantage. <br /><br />So far the scheme has helped four ambitious graduates including last year&rsquo;s winner, Emily Williams. Ms Williams, a Coventry-born mathematics graduate has already enjoyed a placement at Deloitte and is currently with the HR department of Matthew Boulton and Sutton Coldfield colleges as they merged to form Birmingham Metropolitan College and will finish her year with business consultants VC Consulting. <br /><br />The 2007 Graduate Apprentice, Jason Norris secured a permanent job at Deloitte following his placement there and now chairs Birmingham Future&rsquo;s Talent, Retention and Development committee who lead the search for the Graduate Apprentice.<br /><br />Jason said: &ldquo;I can safely say that experiencing working at the three different firms greatly improved my understanding of how the business world actually operates and was the best career decision that I have made. It&rsquo;s opened doors to opportunities I never knew existed and made my CV stand out from all my peers. Deloitte continue to support the scheme following my year, offering the opportunity for the Graduate Apprentice to experience the diverse world of a professional services firm. The scheme continues to provide top class candidates, and Deloitte are delighted to continue to be involved.&rdquo;<br /><br />Anthony McCourt from Birmingham Development Company Ltd said: &ldquo;As developers of Birmingham we were extremely keen to become involved in a scheme which helps to promote and publicise the city as an exciting place to live and work. The questions ranged from why the MPs chose to take part in the programme, to whether the experience has changed their priorities as politicians.<br /><br />23 year old single mum and dance teacher, Natina James from Newtown, who shared her flat with Tim Loughton MP during the series, went to the House of Commons to interview the MPs in a series of filmed responses.<br /><br />Tim Hood, founder of Yoosk.com said:<br /><br />&ldquo;Tower Block of Commons created a strong reaction amongst viewers of the series, but both Yoosk and Channel 4 wanted to give a voice to the people living in the estates and provide the opportunity for them to ask direct questions to the MPs who took part.<br /><br />&ldquo;Their views might not always be pretty, but they are authentic, undiluted views of the people which need to be addressed if parties are to win elections and governments are to serve their constituents. The competition is free to enter and open to anyone who is interested in filmmaking. Filmmakers need to register their team online (<a href="http://filmdash.com/">www.filmdash.com</a>) and attend the event launch on 5th March before handing in their completed film 48 hours later.</p>

<p>The best films will be judged by an expert panel, including editor of Film4.com Catherine Bray and feature film script editor, Kate Leys. A selection of the films will be screened throughout the year by Say Hello and also hosted on sponsor <a href="http://www.bullring.co.uk/website/">Bullring&rsquo;s</a> website <a href="http://www.lifefeelsbetter.co.uk/">www.lifefeelsbetter.co.uk</a>, which will be advertised on Yahoo Movies, MSN Movies, Empire Online and Film.com. <br /><br />Prizes including a selection of blue-ray films provided by Bullring&rsquo;s HMV will be awarded to highly commended films. <br /><br />Chris Unitt, Director of Meshed Media said: &ldquo;The first Film Dash was great fun and resulted in some really imaginative and creative short films. It was great that so many people got involved and we&rsquo;re hoping this year&rsquo;s Film Dash will be bigger and better and encourage more people to show how creative they can be with digital media.       <title>Birmingham Celebrates the International World of Dance for IDFB 2010</title>

<p><strong>This April, Birmingham will become home to the world&rsquo;s leading dancers, dance groups and choreographers as part of the second International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB 2010). The festival will see a line-up of exciting performances and participatory events, encouraging the public to put on their dancing shoes. </strong><br /><br />Driven by <a href="http://www.dancexchange.org.uk/" target="_blank">DanceXchange</a> and <a href="http://www.birminghamhippodrome.com" target="_blank">Birmingham Hippodrome</a>, IDFB 2010 will see over 70 performances take place across Birmingham and the West Midlands from <strong>19 April &ndash; 15 May</strong>, with over 25 companies representing 20 countries from around the world. <br /><br />IDFB is the region&rsquo;s largest dance festival and is funded by <a href="http://www.advantagewm.co.uk" target="_blank">Advantage West Midlands</a>, <a href="http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/regions/west-midlands/" target="_blank">Arts Council England West Midlands</a> and <a href="http://www.birmingham.gov.uk" target="_blank">Birmingham City Council</a>, with sponsorship from investment managers <a href="http://www.brewin.co.uk/" target="_blank">Brewin Dolphin</a>.</p>

<p>Highlights from this year&rsquo;s festival include an opening performance of <em>&lsquo;L&rsquo;allegro, il penseroso ed il Moderato&rsquo;</em> by the <strong>Mark Morris Dance Group</strong>, which will see 24 dancers perform alongside the orchestra of the <strong>English National Opera</strong> in their only UK tour date outside of London.&nbsp; One of the world&rsquo;s most prestigious ballet companies, <strong>Ballet Nacional de Cuba</strong>, will be making their Birmingham debut in their first ever UK tour, bringing their unparalleled technique to two programmes of <em>&lsquo;Giselle&rsquo; </em>and <em>&lsquo;Magia de la Danza&rsquo;</em>, with guest appearances by <strong>Carlos Acosta</strong>.</p>
<p><img height="256" src="/images/uploads/news/Main_Sutra_image_photographer_Hugo_Glendinning.JPG" width="342" /><br /><em>Sutra</em><br /><br />Also taking place throughout the festival will be a new solo Kathak work by acclaimed choreographer <strong>Akram Khan</strong>; an awe-inspiring circus performance from <em>C!RCA</em>; daring acrobatics in <strong><em>Comphania de Dan&ccedil;a Deborah Colker&rsquo;s &lsquo;Cruel&rsquo;</em></strong>; and a stunning dance piece from 17 monks from the Shaolin Temple, China in <em>&lsquo;Sutra&rsquo;</em>. <strong>Strictly Come Dancing</strong> &ndash; The Professionals will also perform at Birmingham Hippodrome as part of the festival, bringing true glitz and glamour to the stage.</p>

<p>IDFB 2010 will host the world premiere of <strong>Rosie Kay</strong> Dance Company&rsquo;s &lsquo;5 SOLDIERS: The Body is the Frontline&rsquo;, a thought-provoking look at the importance of the body in modern warfare. A unique collaboration between Birmingham-based Rosie Kay, artist David Cotterrell and theatre director Walter Meierjohann, 5 SOLDIERS follows on from Rosie&rsquo;s time spent with The 4th Battalion The Rifles.</p>
<p><img height="307" src="/images/uploads/news/Rosie_Kay_5_SOLDIERS_The_Body_is_the_Frontline_photographer_Brian_Slater.jpg" width="342" /><br /><em>Rosie Kay Dance Company's '5 Soldiers'</em><br /><br />This year&rsquo;s festival line-up also includes <strong>&lsquo;Outspoken&rsquo;</strong>, a weekend of new performances from Middle Eastern and North African artists, curated by <strong>Eckhard Thiemann</strong> and featuring a number of UK premieres. <strong>Ex-Riverdance</strong> star, Birmingham-born <strong>Colin Dunne</strong> will be returning to the city to present his first full-length solo show &lsquo;Out of Time&rsquo;, a playful, contemporary homage to the step-dance tradition that has shaped his life.<br /><br />In addition to this, IDFB 2010 will host a number of free public participation events, including a mass line-dance <em>&lsquo;Put Your Foot Down&rsquo;</em> at the Bullring and a folk dance for the 21st Century, <em>&lsquo;United Colours of Dance&rsquo;</em>, which will take over the city&rsquo;s Victoria Square. <br /><br /><strong>David Massingham</strong>, Artistic Director of DanceXchange and Co-Artistic Director of IDFB 2010, said:<br />&ldquo;Once again Birmingham will be showcasing some of the finest international talent from a broad range of dance styles; whether ballet, flamenco, contemporary, ballroom, street or jazz, there&rsquo;s something for everyone. <p><strong>Mitchy Bwoy, the man behind the brand of dance duo Chase &amp; Status, is coming to Birmingham in April to exhibit a selection of new and old work. Opening on 1st April, Mitchy&rsquo;s exhibition will reside at The Sauce Gallery, Custard Factory until the End of May. <br /></strong><br />Following on from the hugely successful <a href="/news/entry/swifty_pops_up_in_birmingham/" target="_blank"><em>Swifty Pop Shop</em></a>, which opened in December 2009, <a href="http://www.punch-records.co.uk/" target="_blank">Punch Records</a> has secured a major scoop bringing <strong>Mitchy Bwoy</strong> to the city and showcasing his famous work. From album covers and illustrations, to famous fonts and fashion designs, fans will be able to see and purchase a range of prints, one-offs and originals. <br /><br />Synonymous with new music and club culture, London-based Mitchy Bwoy has worked with some of the best names in the industry. From his studio, the &lsquo;post-graff&rsquo; artist has designed album covers and branding for the likes of <strong>Chase &amp; Status, Ziggy Marley, Nitin Sawhney and Amp Fiddler. </strong><br /><br />He has also made a name from himself in illustration, fashion and video production. As well as working on a number of special projects, including the <em>Blak Twang/We Love You</em> album project with <strong>Banksy</strong>, <strong>Bacardi</strong> brand development with Mode 2, and live art project <strong>55 DSL</strong>. <br /><br />Ammo Talwar, Director of Punch Records said: <br />&ldquo;After the success of the Swifty shop we knew there was high demand for pioneering graffiti artists and designers to bring their work to the city.
