Taste of the Mailbox 2018
From 3rd to 5th August, the much-anticipated food festival, Taste of the Mailbox returned for a weekend of exclusive masterclasses, live demonstrations and delicious tasters from the centre’s renowned bars and restaurants.
Showcasing the wide range of cuisines on offer, visitors to Canalside were treated to a delicious array of free samples from popcorn to pizza and milkshakes to steak from the likes of Everyman Cinema, Aluna, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, AC Hotel Birmingham, Starbucks, and Miller and Carter.
There were drinks aplenty in the Urban Room, with cocktail demonstrations from Aluna, Churchills, Tom’s Kitchen and Malmaison. In addition to sampling the delicious concoctions, guests were even invited to try their hand at making their very own creations – the perfect afternoon treat! Harvey Nichols also showcased two of their premium brands over the weekend’s festivities with Firefly tonics and Sweet Potato Gins drawing in the crowds and boosting sales across the event.
The weekend saw guests indulge in a series of exclusive ticketed events, with the popular Food Tour kicking off the celebrations. Back by popular demand, the evening provided guests with the opportunity to experience the chef’s signature dish with starters in Harvey Nichols, a main course at Tom’s Kitchen and desserts at Malmaison’s Chez Mal – with each course accompanied by a matching wine or cocktail.
Lap-fai Lee also returned to the luxurious Kitchen Gallery showroom for the second year running with his signature expert masterclasses and decadent feasts. The culinary cult hero brought two tutorials to the line-up, focussing on Asian-inspired seafood and Thai-style cuisine. Under Lap’s supervision, guests learnt how to make the dishes from scratch before enjoying their banquet in the sleek dining room.
Churchills treated Birmingham’s G&T lovers with the opportunity to learn how to create the ultimate tipple as part of their gin masterclass. Ticket-holders tried eight exquisite gins alongside a range of premium tonics and learnt the story behind the nation’s favourite tipple.
Bringing food to the big screen, the final day of Taste of the Mailbox included an exclusive screening of Charlie and the Chocolate factory at Everyman Cinema. While watching the Roald Dahl classic, guests were treated to complimentary truffles from Tom’s Kitchen.
As the festival drew to a close, the team at the Harvey Nichols kitchen were busy preparing for the final event of the day – an exciting collaboration with 2017 MasterChef: The Professionals finalist, Louisa Ellis. The exclusive collaboration saw Ellis bring her innovative menu to the stunning brasserie for one night only, mixing Japanese flavours with the finest British ingredients.
The Taste of the Mailbox was a busy weekend for the Rewired team who managed the event schedule and social media coverage. The one-off events and sampling gave visitors the chance to experience some of the fantastic food and drinks available at the Mailbox. We were especially pleased to see the restaurants benefit from the food and drink sampling, with Gourmet Burger Kitchen reporting a strong footfall on Saturday as a direct result of the weekend’s festivities. We look forward to welcoming Taste of the Mailbox back next summer!
