Kick-starting your career in a PR agency
If you’re considering taking on a fresh challenge and pursuing a future role in PR, we’re sharing some of the key qualities we look for when we are recruiting, and how working in an experienced PR agency can help supercharge your career.
Why choose a career in PR?
PR is designed to raise awareness and enhance the reputation of a brand, through creative campaigns and activations that set the news agenda, communicate key messages, and build trust and engagement with target audiences.
As the media landscape continues to evolve, it’s an exciting time to join a PR agency. With the rise of digital-first platforms, the advent of AI, and the increasing dominance of influencer-led marketing, PR experts must carefully navigate - and maximise - these opportunities while maintaining a strong commitment to quality, authenticity, and news value.
At Rewired, we’re proud to foster a positive workplace culture that values individuality and promotes collaboration. Our talented team bring their unique perspectives, skills, and expertise, while our connected thinking helps to fuel creativity and campaign success.
We’re often on the look-out for new talent to join our growing Birmingham-based team, so what do we think makes a person stand out when they’re starting out in PR?
What makes a great PR professional?
The PR industry is a brilliant mix of different viewpoints and experience - all coming together to deliver bold, effective, and compelling campaigns.
What unites many PR professionals is their passion for a good story, their sense of creativity, and their strong work ethic. These are all invaluable attributes that will stand you in good stead for a successful PR career. Here are a few others we look for in potential candidates:
Storyteller – At its heart, PR is about telling stories. Whether it’s for a B2C or B2B audience, a successful PR campaign focuses on a strong narrative that will inform, engage, spark conversation, and drive action. In order to deliver optimum results for our clients, we need the best quality output. That’s why we always look for new recruits with excellent writing skills - those who have the ability to build a story, craft compelling copy, and convey key messages to different audiences across a range of channels.
Thinker – As a PR professional, you also have to think about the all-important news hook. For a PR piece to cut through the noise, grab the attention of journalists, and meet the objectives of the client, it’s vital that it offers a credible news hook for media. The who / what / where will always be the crucial building blocks of any story but to really hit the headlines, and your KPIs, you can’t forget the ‘why’ – with the confidence to take initiative and think proactively to create the strongest angle for media.
Networker – This goes beyond networking in the traditional sense. Across all forms of PR, the networks you build are invaluable. At Rewired, we pride ourselves on our strong connections with clients and media, as well as stakeholders and business leaders across Birmingham, the Midlands and beyond, and believe these relationships are key to exceeding expectations and delivering outstanding PR results. This also extends to professional development, with our team having the opportunity to engage with regional industry groups, bodies and memberships to support their career growth.
Team player – PR is a team sport. When we recruit, we consider the candidate’s individual skills and strengths, but also how well they will work with others. PR is a hugely collaborative profession, with the need to work in close partnership with colleagues, clients, suppliers… and more! We believe that creativity comes from collaboration, and with a team that is committed to ‘pitching in’ and going the extra mile, we can deliver the best PR campaigns for our clients.
News enthusiast – Are you an avid reader of the news? Do you have a magazine subscription you couldn’t live without? Are breaking news alerts set up on your phone? A keen and genuine interest in the news agenda is a vital part of working in a PR agency - as well as keeping up to date with the latest insights and social media trends. By being plugged in to the current news and industry agenda, we can best advise our clients and maximise opportunities.
Does this sound like you? Talk to us! At Rewired, we’re always interested in hearing from ambitious, creative people wanting to build a career in leading Birmingham PR agency – whether you’re taking your first step on the ladder, or looking to switch lanes and embark on a new career route.
